Epic Alumnus Makes Historic Flight

We received a fascinating update from former Epic student Ben Smith. Unlike most of our students, flying is a hobby for Ben, not a career. For fun he flies “Placid Lassie,” the C-47 that was based here at EVB last year. This past summer, Ben led 15 C-47s/DC-3s across the Atlantic as the D-Day Squadron flying this route: KOXC-> Goose Bay, Labrador -> Narsarsuaq, Greenland -> Reykjavik, Iceland -> Preswick, Scotland. Along with 8 other European DC-3s, they flew an airshow at the Imperial War Museum in Duxford, England, flew a cross Channel formation to drop paratroopers on a historic Normandy drop zone on June 5, flew a formation past Omaha Beach for Presidents Trump and Macron on June 6, and flew additional jump operations on June 5, 8, and 9. From June 10 to 18, they flew operations in Germany honoring the Berlin Airlift at U.S. and German airbases and Berlin. After this historic flying, Ben made it back to the U.S. in time for the Oshkosh fly-in! Ben earned his Instrument Rating and Commercial Multi-Engine at Epic. Thank you for sharing with us, Ben! What an exciting adventure!
