IMSAFE: The Pilot’s Personal Preflight Fitness Checklist

I'M SAFE Pilot Checklist

In aviation safety, pilots learn the acronym IMSAFE as a simple, yet powerful, tool to
conduct a personal wellness assessment before every flight. Flight schools like Epic recommend using it as an “aviation IMSAFE checklist” to help avoid human‑factor risk whether flying civil or commercial. What Does IMSAFE Stand For? The IMSAFE FAA meaning stands for the major aeromedical factors and wellness indicators every pilot should evaluate before every flight. The IMSAFE Preflight Checklist for Pilots: I Illness Am I well? Do I have symptoms? M Medication Am I taking prescription or over the counter medication? Did I consult my Aeromedical Examiner (AME) to determine if the medicine I am taking is legal to fly while taking it? S Stress Am … Read more

Understanding Flat Spins in Aviation: Causes, Physics, and Recovery

What is a flat spin in aviation?

What is a flat spin? A flat spin is a dangerous and often unrecoverable flight condition where an airplane spins while maintaining a relatively flat pitch attitude. Unlike a normal spin, where the aircraft descends nose-down in a steep spiral, a flat spin involves a nearly horizontal attitude, making recovery extremely difficult. Understanding the meaning, causes, and physics of a flat spin is crucial for pilots, especially those undergoing advanced training or performing aerobatics. A simple definition is a spin in which an aircraft descends in tight circles while remaining nearly horizontal. Aerodynamics of Flat Spins: Explaining the Physics In a flat spin, the aircraft experiences an extreme stall on both wings. The aerodynamics differ significantly from standard flight or … Read more

Epic Red Tails In The Sky

Epic Red Tail Project

Safety First “Aircraft on final for runway 9, winds favor runway 27. Red Grumman departing runway 27.”  Over 25 years ago, and I still vividly recall the departure at this Class G, uncontrolled airport. The incoming white aircraft never acknowledged my radio call.  Every year, runway incursions, traffic conflicts, mid-air collisions, and near misses occur. The FAA FAST Team reports an average of 30 mid-air collisions in the United States each year. Mid-air collisions are generally reported below 8,000 feet AGL, within 30 miles of an airport, and involving aircraft with communication equipment.  Radios are not required equipment in Class E, Class G, or at uncontrolled airports. The FAA advises playing it safe and making radio calls if equipped. The … Read more
